Today I stepped in a Mizuho bank's ATM around Kanda Station. And I keyed my number in it and was surprised. Yes. You know hear comes Hideyo.
In this november 1st, Bank of Japan started to change bills against copying. And the new surface of 1000yen bill has a portrait of Noguchi Hideyo. He was a famous doctor and also bacteriologist. Who is he? It made me interested in him and I searched information about him.
*NOGUCHI Hideyo (1876-1928)*
In November 9th, 1876, Noguchi Hideyo was borned as a son of a poor farmer in Fukushima which is located in Tohoku area. He was named Seisaku. And when he was a child, his left hand was burned. People say he was impressed by Mr. Watanabe who had an operation on his and he'd like to be a doctor. After he graduated Inawashiro junior high school, he began to study medical science.
In 1896, when he was only 20 years old, he got a doctor license in Japan. And its 2 years later, he changed his name Seisaku to Hideyo. He worked at Kitazato institute for the study of infectious diseases. But most of his coworkers were elites who graduated Medical science School of Tokyo Imperial University. And he was regarded as a person without school education and treated coldy. Then, people who graduated TIU were abosolute elites and had tendencies to be snob.
But Dr. Noguchi met Prof. Simon Flexner as a interpreter when he visited Tokyo. Noguchi was very good at English and Dr. Kitazato found his talent. And Prof. Simon invited Noguchi and he got a job at the University of Pennsylvania in 1900. After that he got a job at Rockefeller Medical Institute. He was nominated three times for the Nobel prize in his life but not given. He got some medals from some western countries. In 1928, while Noguchi was studying yellow fever, he died of it at Ghana which is located in western Africa.
Here is an episode. Hideyo was very loose for money matters. He bilked his debt many times. I wonder that BOJ decided to print his portarait on 1000 yen bill. I feel it's a kind of jokes. And maybe there are many executives have a sense of humor. Yes, it's a joke too:)

Pathos of Ichiyo
The time was around noon. I listened to the radio being tuned to NHK 2. A woman talked about Higuchi Ichiyou. She was a famous female writer in Meiji era. At that time few female writer was there.
In this november 1st, Bank of Japan started to change bills against copying. And the new surface of 5000yen bill has a portrait of Higuchi Ichiyou. She left some great works for us. Who on earth is she? I had knew a little about her but it made me interested in her and I searched information about Ichiyou.
*HIGUCHI Ichiyou(1872-1896)*
In May 2nd, 1872, Higuchi Ichiyou was borned as a daughter of a public servant in Tokyo. She was named Natsu. And peple say when she was 7 years old, she finished to read a long series "Hakkenden" written by Kyokutei Bakin who was a famous writer in Edo era. Its 7 years ago she entered Haginoya that Nakajima Utako taught how to make Tanka.
When she was 15, her older brother died of consumption and his father Noriyoshi died too. And their death made her the head of Higuchi family. She had a shop which selled fancy goods with her mother and younger sister but being stimulated by her schoolmate Tanabe Kaho who got much money writing a novel she tried to write novels. Then Ichiyou spent 10yen a month to housekeep but Kaho got 30yen writing only one novel.
After she decided to make a living writing novels, she studied how to write the novel under Nakarai Tohsui who belonged to Asahi Shimbun, a newspaper company, as a writer. She was hard to try writing but it was a difficult way to make much money. And its poverty made her and her family move to downtown. In 1894, her works "Ohtsugomori"(on New Year's Eve), "Take Kurabe", "Nigorie" and "Jyu-san Ya" were praised by Mori Ohgai, Kohda Rohan and Saito Ryokuu, famous writers. her life as a writer had just 14 months and she also died of consumption at November 23rd, 1896.
Here is an episode. her real name was Natsu and her name as a writer Ichiyo means a leaf. And Ichiyo was called after a legend connected with Bodhi-dharma, who was a great Zen bonze. Bodhi-dharma was born in South India and he went to China as a Zen missionary. And one day He Bodhi-dharma went down to the Yangzi by a reed leaf in place of ship beacause he had no money. And in Japanese, "Ashi" means reed and also means money(same spelling in alphabet, but they have different accents). Ichiyo said that Bodhi-dharma and I had no "Ashi". It means we had no money in each lives. And it also means because of no "Ashi" dharama went down to the Yangzy by an "Ashi" It's a very clever joke of Ichiyo, isn't it ?

His Tough Day
In the evening, I met a friend of mine, Asa in front of Kokukoen Station. I was waiting him for approximately one hour. But I din't feel bad. I like being alone at autumn night and like seeing streams of people who are going back to home or going ahead to the station.
Anyway, we went to the restaurant and we had a supper. We talked about predidential election in the U.S., Chechen conflicts and the historical relation between Russia and Chechen, Mr. Koda beheaded in Iraq, Islamic fundamentalism and the UN. He had looked tired and sleepy a little. He didn't descrive the reason he was tired and sleepy. And he just said me, `See my diary.'
And as soon as I came back home, I powered my comuputer and I browsed his diary. The article he wrote made me very surprised. Today he had kept himself woke up from two'o clock morning. Beacuse he searched his friend who lost the last train. Unfortunatelly his friend's phone had been short of the battery. It meant he couldn't come in contact with his friend. I think it was the worst case about that one had to search for someone who lost his way. In addition, his girlfriend asked Asa to search for his boyfriend through the Internet. I said `oh shit!' unconsciously. And just now I have found out that his friend had not lost, he had just walked to his home.
And in spite of his kindness, they had two hours to meet. It's a kind of a little tragedy. Before he met me, he found out his friend by road, he had a part time job in a warehouse and exercised himself in the gym. It sounds a tough day, isn't it? Comparing with him, I just had been to school and back to Kokukoen until I met him. I was just ashamed of myself to be tired doing nothing special.
